Sidwell fought back in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead over the Panthers. On the first pitch of the inning, center fielder Will Pryce hit a massive home run to left field to tie the game at 1-1. Then, pitcher Kevin Carpenter-Holmes singled (Owen Liu-Bailey on as courtesy runner). Jay Horton laid down a nice sacrifice bunt to move Liu-Bailey into scoring position. Designated hitter Tanner Breslin fouled off two pitches with two strikes before hitting a line drive over the second baseman to put runners on the corners with one out. To take the lead, third baseman Tommy Levy executed a safety squeeze to perfection.
Unfortunately, Potomac took the lead in the sixth. Despite excellent execution at the plate late in the game, the Quakers couldn't tip the scales. Sidwell had second and third with one out in the sixth. Jay Horton lined out directly at the right fielder, and then Breslin lined out directly to center field to end the inning. In the seventh, to lead off Tommy Levy smacked a line drive -- directly at the center fielder. Eric Sun and John McMurray hit back-to-back singles, and then Mikey Levy singled up the middle. Sun dove headfirst into home on the play and appeared to tie the game. Unfortunately, he was called out -- and Porter Speece's 300ft fly ball to left ended the game, rather than being a go-ahead sacrifice fly.
The game was well-fought by both teams, and Sidwell ended MAC play for the year with a heart-breaking loss that could have just as easily been an exhilarating win to advance to the championship.
