The Skinny: Sidwell played well on the road against perennial powerhouse St. John's and fought hard in a respectable defeat.
Synopsis: Starter Finn Stern pitched well early on, allowing only two runs in the first three innings. Defense was solid for the Quakers, who did not commit an error. St John's was an excellent all-around team, and Sidwell battled at the plate, managing eight hits over the course of the game, but scored only three runs. The offense was highlighted by a "No Doubter" homerun to right center by Junior Nick Fernandez in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. In the end, St. John's offense, which put up at least a run in every inning but the first, was too much for the underdog Quakers, who fell 9-3.
Analysis: The Quakers offense was decent, putting together eight hits against a strong pitching and defensive St. John's team. The defense was nearly flawless, and Sidwell played their game, which, unfortunately, wasn't quite enough to beat St. John's.
Looking Ahead: Sidwell should feel good about this game. They played well, up to their competition. If they can play this well against rival GDS at home on Tuesday, they should be tough to stop. Sidwell also will look for redemption in a home game this Thursday against Riverdale Baptist, who beat Sidwell soundly in its season opener back in early March.
