Beware the Ides of March… and baseball games that go on just a little too long… or so the Quakers found out under a sun-filled sky at the ballpark. Opening day at Sidwell saw the hosts battle an error-free Cadet squad from St. John's College High School into and through the final frame, bringing the tying run to the plate but falling short by a score of 8-5.
The Quakers opened the scoring in the second inning after first baseman Will Pryce, drawing a leadoff walk, moved up on a solid single off the bat of center fielder Aidan Breslin, and ultimately scored via the HBP for RBI by Easy Weissman with the bases loaded. The fourth inning saw most of the scoring when the visiting Cadets put on a small ball clinic, singling and sacrificing their way to a 3-1 lead before Sidwell would plate two, again via the HBP with bases loaded, and two more with a Robby Schooling double down the left field line in the home half.
Pitcher Tanner Breslin, spinning a gem with both great intensity and composure, would take the slimmest of leads and mounting pitch count into the final frame, but ultimately it was St. Johns fundamental game of singles and bunting for base hits that would chase the starter and lead to the victory.
Sidwell looks for the bounce back game of this young season on Thursday under the lights at Meridian.
