The 2023 edition of Sidwell JV Baseball ended just as it started: with a solid team win, this one by the score of 3-1 at home against the Panthers from Potomac. With the win the Quakers ended the season with an impressive 11-6 record, finishing a perfect 7-0 in conference play.
In about as evenly matched of a game as you can get, both teams put up solid pitching and defense to finish this one at a brisk pace. Despite giving up a run in the top of the first inning, it was starter George Bankoff providing his defense with routine balls in play all afternoon and getting the win, his fifth of the season.
While the Quaker offense was again stymied by an effective opponent, finishing with only three hits, there was none bigger than the one off the bat of starting right fielder Stephen Koopersmith, who singled and scored in the game-defining third inning, finishing responsible for each of the three Sidwell runs in some form (two RBI and one run scored). Koopersmith’s day was not done, however, gobbling up every fly ball hit his way on defense, including a heads up play to double up a threat of a Panther baserunner after a hit-and-run gone awry ended a late-game rally opportunity for the visitors.
Protecting the narrow lead, starter Bankoff gave way to the starter-turned-closer Tanner Breslin, working three innings of near-perfect relief to earn the save, finishing the inning, game, and season by striking out the side.
The Sidwell coaching staff would like to thank the fans and families of the young men who turned in a great deal of effort over the spring season. Best of luck to all in finishing up the school year and have a happy and safe summer.
