The Quakers of Sidwell Friends brought their game on a business trip across the Potomac for a mid-week battle under the lights against the Mustangs from Meridian.
Backed by swing-and-miss stuff from starting pitcher George Bankoff, the Quaker pitchers and defense took a no-hit bid into the 6th inning en route to an error-free 9-2 victory, their third in a row scoring nine runs, extending the win streak to seven games. Bankoff was dealing from the start, needing only 54 pitches to work through four innings, fanning six Mustang batters on the evening before turning the ball over to the duo of Alex Allamby and Cody Encarnacion, each adding a pair of strikeouts to match a season-high 10 Ks for the game.
On offense, Sidwell would set the tone and jump out to an early lead thanks to a two-out single off the bat of catcher Eli Berman, scoring designated hitter Tanner Breslin and left fielder Porter Speece. After a few scoreless exchanges, whatever hope the home team Mustangs had in a comeback was dashed in the top of the fourth inning, when the Quakers would strike again, this time off the bats of left-side infielders Daniel Piho (3B) and Tommy Levy (SS), with a pair of two-run singles, extending the lead to 7-0. For good measure, in the sixth, it was the speedy center fielder Jay Horton, cracking a double, scoring Piho, before craftily stealing third base and home on the throwback to the pitcher, putting the game out of reach for good.
The Quakers hope to avoid the heavy late-April forecasted rains, welcoming Georgetown Prep to the friendly confines (of Sidwell) on Saturday.
