The JV Quakers of Sidwell Friends School opened up the 2023 campaign on the road against the Wildebeests of Sandy Springs Friends School, an unfamiliar opponent to many out of the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference.
Under a clear but chilly sky with blustery winds, the hosts would be the first on the board after a leadoff baserunner worked around to score. Down 1-0, newcomers Teddy Friedman and Tommy Levy would each knock “welcome to the big(ger) leagues” 2-run singles in the top half of the second. Starting pitcher Alex Allamby would respond in-kind by striking out the side to turn the tables and take a 7-1 lead into what would be the back half of a darkness-shortened game.
With Sidwell looking to small-ball with productive run scoring balls-in-play from Elie Fisher and Stephen Koopersmith, the crafty Allamby would paint corners throughout the 3rd, with help from Cody Encarnacion diving and eating up grounders at shortstop. After yet a few more runs in the 4th, reliever Owen Liu-Bailey would calmly shut down any hopes for the home team in their last at bat of the cold evening, striking out the side.
