Sidwell snatched defeat from the jaws of victory after having climbed back into the game after a poor start.

In the first inning, the Quakers went down 1-2-3 in the top and dug themselves into a four runs hole in the bottom by allowing two walks and committing three errors. Things looked bleak in the top of the third when Oliver Bass came to the plate to face a good Wilson pitcher, who had retired the first eight Sidwell batters in order. On a two-strike count, Bass hit a sharp line drive to right-center and then promptly stole second. After a hit-by-pitch and a walk, pitcher Nate Freishtat came to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded and ripped a two-RBI line drive to pull the game back to 2-4.

Freishtat settled down after the first and kept the Quakers in the game. And, after a poor offensive showing the first 2.2 innings, Sidwell clawed back to an even score in the top of the sixth, by drawing walks and getting hits in key situations in deep counts. Good base-running also helped, with Harrison Blain making a great read on a passed ball to score the game-tying sixth run from third with two outs. After an exciting sixth inning on offense, reliever Justin Hurley was able to keep the score at 6-6 and quickly return the Quakers to bat.

In the seventh Hurley led off with a walk and stole second. After an out and a few strikes, Hurley broke for third on a 1-2 count. When the catcher dropped Blain's third strike, Hurley took a hard turn around third and dashed home on the throw to first. He made it home easily, with Blain out at first -- but sadly was called out on appeal for having failed to touch home!

In the bottom of the seventh, Hurley struck out the first hitter, allowed a hit to the second, and struck out the third. Having advanced to third on stolen bases, the runner was itching to score. On a two-strike count, their clean-up hitter hit a soft liner to center -- which sadly fell just out of the reach of a diving Joey Romansky in center field.

As they say, baseball is a game of inches -- and today's game certainly supported that claim.
