Sidwell did good work in some aspects of the game in its opener against St. John's. The pitching was reliable and the defense was generally good, with some excellent plays made in the outfield, notably an on-the-run catch made by Max Kohn on a ball hit to the right-center gap. The deficient aspect of the Quakers' game was hitting. The team was unable to generate significant offense against live pitchers, which is probably explained by both the strength of the St. John's pitchers and also a lack of opportunity to practice against live pitching thus far this season. Hopefully, hitting will be significantly improved next Friday against Riverdale Baptist.
On the defensive side, the Quakers made a few mistakes, upon which the Cadets capitalized in a big way. In three of the six defensive innings, Sidwell gave St. John's an additional out on offense by way of a fielding error. In each case, the hitter who reached on the error scored, and in each of these innings, the Cadets scored additional runs with two outs, leaving a final tally of nine unearned runs. Lesson learned: don't give any opponent, particularly a strong one, more than the three outs they get by rule.
